The Promising Future of the Rail Industry

The transport sector was internationally impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic's. Most air companies were grounded, car travel reduced significantly and cities implemented new safety measures on public transport. At the same time, one industry rose to the challenge. The railway industry proved itself to be robust and adaptive. Even as passenger rails saw fewer passengers, freight trains were critical in delivering protective equipment as well as food to grocery stores. Passenger trains are likely to have a promising future as the increase in domestic tourism would popularize traveling by train. In addition, the European Commission intends to name 2021 "the European Year of Rail". Due to the European Green Deal, rail is being promoted as a sustainable, innovative mode of transportation, and especially one with low carbon emission. The European parliament asserts that the rail industry will play a significant role in meeting the goal of climate neutrality by 2050. For Europe, rail is a great travel option given the close borders between countries, and allows for social and economic growth. With the increase of domestic tourism, trains will prove to be a safe, green choice for traveling across the country. Many tourists are more tempted to ride the train, as it offers quick, comfortable transport for small distances. Air travel being extremely pollutant and high-risk during a pandemic, the rail industry becomes a favourable option for domestic tourists, allowing safe and lower emission transport. It remains to be seen if the rail industry will be the first to benefit post-COVID-19, but the next few years will certainly offer many opportunities for this veteran industry to stand out.
